Cooking Brownies with Children

In celebration of our April Special I would like to share one of my children’s favorite things to do with their grandma!

Summer time is coming and you have four children sitting at home with nothing to do. Why not pull out your Grandmas favorite brownie recipe and holler at the children to come give you a hand. (What kid doesn’t like making a mess in the kitchen?) Items you will need to create the ultimate brownies with kid portraits are as follows.

  • 5 aprons
  • Brownie mix and ingredients
  • 9×13 baking pan
  • Vegetable or canola oil spray
  • Aluminum foil
  • Cookie cutters
  • Canned frosting
  • Writing pack of frosting or pastry bag

Cooking brownies is fun and easy to do. You and the children can cook brownies either from mix or from scratch. However, you may want to create a fancy brownie by creating cute portraits on your brownies after they have cooled.

First step for the children to do when beginning to cook their brownies is to line the 9×13 baking pan with the foil and make sure they spray vegetable oil on the foil to keep the brownies from sticking. For the perfect brownies keep a little extra foil hanging on each end of the pan so you can lift the brownies from the pan.

Second step – Put the pan of brownies into the oven to bake according to your recipe directions. If you would like to make the brownies colorful or add a crunch to it, add chocolate chips and nuts. (Nuts only if you are not allergic)

Third, make sure once the brownies are done allow them to cool at least for 15 minutes.*Remember* Use the extra foil to lift the brownies out of the pan.

Forth, you can either cut the brownies in a square shape or use your cookie cutter to create different shapes and sizes.

Fifth step – Decoration Time! Children love this part. You can spread your frosting onto the brownie. Fill the pastry bag with frosting. The children can create their own kid portraits or portraits of each other. Child portraits on a pastry can make the person feel special and create wonderful memories. Child portraits can be created much like a cartoon character or any image you see fit to use. Just have fun with it! You can use various types of candies for the eyes and nose and mouth or you can use a popsicle stick and smooth out different frostings in order to create your very own portrait.

Lastly, chill the brownies for at least 30 minutes so the frosting will have time to set. Then enjoy your brownies!! Do not forget to help Grandma clean up the mess after you are done.

The best brownies are generally your Grandmas brownies. However, after baking and decorating brownies with your Grandma this will become the best brownie in the world! There is nothing like going into the kitchen and baking brownies alongside your Grandma. These brownies are made with love!! These are memories that a child can share with his or her own children.

“All you need is a chef’s hat, some veggies, an apron, a wooden spoon and you have all that it takes to create a lovely memory!”
