Tips on Portraits for the Fall and Christmas Season

Fall is a great time of year. The leaves are changing and the holiday season is approaching. This is also a great time of year to get portraits made of your family. The outdoors creates a wonderful pallet of colors that can be used to your benefit. The holiday season also offers a wide range of ideas for portrait sessions.

It is important to prepare for a family portrait. Outfits, planning the session, and the day of the shoot all need to be considered.

1) Outfits
Deciding what to wear to a family portrait photo shoot can seem like a daunting decision. The important thing to remember is that you are taking these photos to capture your family and not your outfits. Make sure to wear solid, neutral or pastel colors. This will prevent your clothing from taking the attention off your face. Often, patterns or bright clothing can pull the focus away from the family and onto the clothing. Outdoor fall sessions and holiday backdrops can be very colorful and will allow the photographed individuals to pop in the portrait. Also, make sure to wear something that you are comfortable and feel confident in. It will show in your pictures.

2) Planning the Portrait Session
Planning when to schedule your portrait session is also important, especially if you have young children. You do not want to schedule it too early or during their nap time. It is also ideal to not schedule a session after the child has had a very eventful day. The child may become tired and restless. This can create upset children and it will make it more difficult to get that perfect picture.

3) The Day of the Shoot
Relax and have fun! This is a happy day. You want to create a memory that you can look back on and share with family and friends. Try not to be nervous or rigid in your photos. Take the advice of the photographer. Even if something feels a little silly, go with it because it can end up being a great picture– and if it isn’t, then luckily you can take more pictures. Outdoor settings for fall sessions are an especially great way to get innovative pictures. There are a lot of natural elements to incorporate into photos taken outdoors. Indoor holiday sessions also provide a lot of fun backdrops and props.
